COVID and Olympic

The state of emergency issued in Tokyo area is lifted by the Japanese government today.
Even under the state of emergency, daily lives here seem to be normal, and the new COVID cases have been slightly increasing for the last couple of weeks.

Last year, in 2020, the government did not take any effective measure against the virus until the postponement of Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 was announced. The government was accused because they seemed to treat lives of citizens were less important than Olympic Games.

This time, again, the state of emergency is lifted just before the torch relay starts from Fukushima scheduled on March 25.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games are sure to be an important event especially for athletes and economy. This time, spectators from overseas are barred according to recent news, which affect businesses of tourist related industries such as hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and etc. People in charge of other industries may not welcome the Games under this COVID pandemic, while missing successful competitions of top athletes.

We hope, anyway, the Olympic Games do not lead to expand the infection.
Vaccination, by the way, has just started for health care workers, and ordinary citizens are yet unknown when vaccines get available.
